Here are major highlights of Baltimore's everchanging attitudes of life

1798

Solomon Etting, an active Republican, made his first plea for the civil rights of Jews. The "Jew bill," defeated year after year for thirty years, became an issue symbolic of the oppression of Baltimore, as well as the oppression of Jews and blacks. Baltimore identified with the medieval merchant cities, fighting passionately for certain freedoms-the Jew's right to hold office and serve on juries, the black man's right to remain free unless proved a slave, and the slave owner's right to emancipate his slave.
